Seriously, was anyone surprised? Rudd wasn't….
“But we’re in our country and the Dalai Lama is a major world religious leader and it’s important that we treat him with appropriate respect.”
According to the Chinese,
“The Dalai Lama is not a simple religious figure. He is a long-time political exile engaged in splittist activities and destroying national unity,”.
This couldn't be further than the truth. I believe the Dalai Lama has accepted the fact that the Chinese will occupy Tibet, and is instead seeking to bring back the Tibetan culture and spirituality. He said that Tibetans would better manage their own environment and internal affairs, [and] China could retain control of foreign affairs and defence.
“Just to suppress with more military is only a temporary answer. Our approach is not seeking independence, not seeking separation regardless of past history.”
