Laptop has risen from the dead, Activesync continues to suck ass

The motherboard on the laptop died. Lost the ethernet port, and was experiencing lots of lock ups and blue screens.

So it got fixed, and I am suffering from the afflication that I berate other for. Not enough good backups.

I had backed up about 30 gig of data, but not my outlook files, or my PhatNotes files. Lucky for me, mNotes was working fine, and so I've switched to Lotus Notes instead of Outlook for the time being. Also lucky for me, PhatNotes was maintaining a backup in my usual data folder. So a bit of dumb luck and I have't lost anything yet.

The reason I thought I was going to loose everything, is that Activesync totally failed to grasp what had happened, was giving me the ever so helpfull error “Activesync encountered a problem on the desktop (click image for howto fix)” or “the outlook profile is wrong, change it” (where, and to what who knows). Again, I am reminded of just how good the palm desktop synchronisation was. After a total meltdown, on either the device or the host PC, one click of the sync button, and it would recognise something was wrong, and say “hey, the device is saying it shouldbe able to sync with me, but I've never seen it before, do you want to assume the device knows better, and that I should take my cues from it?” To which you say “yes please” and 5 minutes later you'd never know you'd had a problem. Even better, was when the palm had been completely wiped clean due to a power problem, and it would ask you “hey, this device looks brand new, do you want to select one of the profiles I have here and restore it?” To which you would reply “yes” and 5 minutes later you'd never know you'd had a problem.

Yes, this phone and I have a love hate relationship going.

At least I haven't had the problems glen has had…..
