Jess, a developer will want to build a mutli story building on a
land that he has just bought. He will will want to then sell the
units?office space in his buidling to pay the construction/design and
then make a handy bit of cash.

An architect then talks with the builder (but usually the architect
will have most of the say) and come up with a design. Size rooms,
spacing of columns ( tall skinny things supporting roof…..the thing
over your head…………the head which is on your shoulders) to make
rooms big a possible etc. they wil decide on how tall the buidling can
be, this depends on planning rules and how much money the developer has
or can get back. He/she will decide what the awnings and fancy crap
will be.

Once the architect has got some preliminary drawings they come to
us. Our client can be the builder or the architect. We tell the
architect what size the columns have to be and how thick the slabs have
to be. This will aid him in his design also. The building must also be
designed for lateral loads as well as dead ( self weight, tiles,
furniture, walls etc) and live loads ( people walking and living).

This process usually happens no matter what the size of the job,
although in many smaller jobs we can usually come up with something but
usaully there is an architect.

So now you know.

As far as what i do, tell them i make sure structures don't blow away, fall down or crack (for slab on ground stuff).

Reo – reinforcement bars

Lateral Load – Wind loading

Slab – The thing you walk on

Beams – the things that support the thing you walk on
