When someone asks us to do something for free they’re saying it has no value.
I remember working for a company that paid top dollar to a recruiting firm to fill a position. I used some of my own networking contacts to fill the position, and when I asked what kind of referral incentive they offered, I was shocked to get responded to with accusations of being greedy, selfish, and not a team player.
As you can expect, I discontinued my efforts – if my network has no value to them, then there was no point using it. The candidate in question withdrew his application (his own decision). Our managers were about as clueless as the one above.
Heh – and if it was the company that I think it is, then they did eventually have a referral incentive plan…
